5th graders will have a rotating language focus every week.
Week 1) Wordly Wise: Students will have spelling/vocabulary words to learn and practice throughout the week. They will have class time to work on the words and the practice pages will also be posted on my Google Classroom. If they do not finish in class they can finish it at home. Friday there will be a short quiz based on the words. (This is not a spelling test.)
Week 2) Daily Language & Spelling: This is a little workbook we will be using in class. The students can bring it home if they need to finish any assignments. There will be a spelling test on Friday using their words for that particular week. (Students will be working at different levels. They will know which list and how many words they are responsible for learning.)
Week 3) Journal: Students will be given a 'This or That' topic each day. They will choose which one they would like to write about. They are to see if they can write to the prompt and use any of our vocabulary or spelling words from previous weeks, for an added challenge. On Friday, each student will select ONE piece of their writing from the week to turn in to be graded using the rubric they have in class.
PLEASE BE AWARE:
Our classroom is a beautiful melting of languages and skills to be practiced at a given time. Since I have students with such diverse needs I will be differentiating this rotating schedule to fit the needs of your child where there currently are each week. I have new curriculum coming in the mail, as we speak, so that I can continue to change this rotation as needed. The students are already aware that we all have different needs and that they are only to focus on what THEY need. Some students will be working at easier levels as they learn more English, some students will have less words to do, some students will have challenge words, etc. Thank you for your support and understanding as I want each student to be challenged enough for them but not to the point of frustration. I want each child to be successful!
